What your budget actually buys

The difference between the cheapest car here and the dearest is rarely how well it has been looked after. Both go through identical preparation. What the extra money buys is one of three things: a few years of age, thirty or forty thousand fewer miles, or a bigger, more practical shape.

At the lower end you are typically looking at an older supermini that has covered a fair few miles. A Corsa, a 107, a C1, a Twingo, a Picanto. Cheap to insure, tax and run, and ideal for a new driver or a short hop along the coast road. Expect the odd car-park scar and an interior that shows somebody used it. Do not expect anything mechanically unsound; it would not be for sale if it were.

Spend a little more and the registration year moves on, the mileage drops and the choice widens. Why service history beats a low odometer reading

Mileage is the first number people look at and one of the least useful in the advert. A car showing 60,000 miles that has spent two years doing four-mile trips to the shops can be in poorer health than one showing 100,000 miles of steady motorway work. Short journeys never get an engine warm, which is hard on oil, exhausts and batteries.

What matters is evidence. A stamped book is ideal, but at this price plenty of well-kept cars come with a folder of invoices instead, which is just as good. Old MOT certificates are free to check online and tell you a lot: whether the mileage climbs consistently and whether advisories were dealt with or simply repeated.

What the 50-mile road test actually catches

Every car is driven at least 50 miles before it is advertised, and the distance is not arbitrary. A ten-minute run round the block proves nothing: faults on cars of this age hide behind a cold engine and a short trip, then appear on your first proper journey.

Fifty mixed miles of town traffic, dual carriageway and a decent hill brings out what counts. A gearbox that jumps out of second once hot. A clutch that slips under load climbing towards the moors. A temperature gauge that creeps in traffic, or a fan that never cuts in. A wheel bearing that hums above fifty. Brakes that pull under heavy use. A misfire that appears only at full temperature. An engine that will not restart cleanly when hot.

Alongside the drive comes a mechanical health check with the wheels off the ground: brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, fluids, leaks and underside corrosion. Anything wrong is put right before the car goes on sale.

What comes with every car

Whatever you pay, the package is the same: a fresh 12 months MOT, a full service before handover, and a three-month engine and gearbox warranty. That covers the two components that would genuinely hurt to replace at this price, for three months from the day you collect it. Paying for your car, and part exchange

Payment is by bank transfer or card. There is no finance, hire purchase or PCP here, which keeps things simple and keeps prices where they are. Customers who arrange their own funding through a bank, credit union or personal loan are very welcome.
