Why a used Ford is usually a safe bet

Ford has been the second most common make through this forecourt for years, behind only Vauxhall. The reasoning is the same: they were sold in vast numbers, they are mechanically straightforward, and the parts are cheap and universally available. On a car worth £2,500 that is the single most important thing about it, because the purchase price is only ever half the story.

The other half is that Fords of this era are, on the whole, better to drive than they needed to be. A Fiesta from 2012 rides and steers considerably better than most of what it competed against, which is worth something on the roads round here — the A171 over the moors and the coast road to Filey are not motorway-smooth.

Fiesta

For years the best-selling car in Britain, which means there is a huge supply of them and a mechanic anywhere in the country has seen a thousand. The 1.25 petrol is the one we handle most: not fast, but honest, cheap to insure and cheap to fix. A very sensible first car, and just as sensible as a second car in the household.

Ka

Tiny, cheap and much tougher than its size suggests. If the job is short local journeys, parking in town and the lowest possible running cost, a Ka is difficult to argue with.

Focus

The family-sized choice. More room, more comfort over distance, and still cheap to keep on the road. Worth the step up if you regularly carry more than yourself or cover a proper annual mileage.

Fusion and C-Max

The taller, more practical bodies built off the same underpinnings. They come through less often but they are exactly the right answer for someone who wants a small car they do not have to fold themselves into.
