Buying a used car when you live in Filey

Filey is a town of around 6,500 people, and that comes with an obvious drawback when you need a car: the choice on your doorstep is limited. Most people end up looking at Scarborough, Bridlington or Driffield anyway, which turns the question into where is worth the trip.

We are eight miles away. From Muston Road it is a straight run north on the A165 and you are with us in about fifteen minutes — quicker than the drive to Bridlington and considerably quicker than heading inland to Malton or Driffield. For a lot of people in Filey we are effectively the nearest independent forecourt worth looking at.

That proximity matters more than it sounds. It means you can come and look at a car twice before deciding, bring someone with you for a second opinion, or drop back in afterwards if you want something checked. None of that is realistic when you have bought from somewhere an hour away.

Getting here from Filey

Head out of Filey on the A1039 and join the A165 north towards Scarborough. Stay on it through Cayton and Eastfield and follow signs for the town centre and South Bay — we are on Somerset Terrace at Pavilion Garage, YO11 2PA.

Eight miles, roughly fifteen minutes outside the summer season. In July and August allow a bit longer through Cayton. If you would rather come by train, Filey and Scarborough are on the same line and it is a short hop, then a few minutes from Scarborough station to us.

Filey driving tends to be short local runs, the A165 up and down the coast, and the occasional longer trip inland. That points towards small and mid-sized petrol cars rather than high-mileage motorway diesels — something economical that starts reliably on a cold, damp morning by the sea and does not cost a fortune to insure or service.

Condition matters far more than mileage on a car of this age, and a proper look underneath is part of what our mechanic does before anything goes on sale. We would rather turn a car away than sell one that is going to disappoint someone twelve months later.
