Worth the drive up the coast

Bridlington is the biggest town on this stretch of coast, so there is no shortage of places to look at a car. What there is less of is somewhere small enough that the person selling you the car is the person who chose it, drove it, and had it checked.

That is the case we would make for the thirty minutes up the A165. We are an independent family business in Scarborough, we have traded under the same name for over 25 years, and we keep a deliberately small forecourt of cars we have each picked individually. You will not be handed between a salesperson, a business manager and an aftersales desk.

We would not pretend a thirty-minute drive is nothing. But for most people buying a car is a once-every-few-years decision worth a couple of thousand pounds or more, and half an hour is a small price for dealing with someone who will still answer the phone in six months.

Getting here from Bridlington

Take the A165 north out of Bridlington through Carnaby and Reighton, past the Filey turn, and continue into Scarborough. Follow signs for the town centre and South Bay — we are at Pavilion Garage on Somerset Terrace, YO11 2PA.

Seventeen miles, usually about thirty minutes. It is a single clear road, so it is a much easier drive than the mileage suggests. Bridlington and Scarborough are also on the same rail line if you would rather come over by train and drive back.

Buying across the county line

Bridlington sits in the East Riding while we are in North Yorkshire, but for buying a car that makes no practical difference at all. There is no restriction on where you buy, your V5C simply records your address, and your insurance is priced on your postcode wherever the car came from.

The one thing worth knowing is that we deal with the V5C change of keeper here on the day, so that side of it is done before you leave. Taxing the car is the new keeper's job wherever you buy it — it takes a couple of minutes online with the green slip we hand you, and we are happy to sit and do it with you before you set off.

What every car goes through before it is advertised

Every car we take in is road-tested for at least 50 miles and inspected by our own mechanic before we advertise it. If a car does not pass, it does not go on the forecourt. That is also why every car we sell leaves with 12 months MOT, a full service and a 3-month engine and gearbox warranty — we would rather be confident up front than argue about it later.
