Why we end up with so many Vauxhalls

Close to a quarter of every car that has passed through this forecourt has been a Vauxhall, and that is not an accident. In the price bracket we work in, Vauxhall does something very useful: it built enormous numbers of straightforward, mechanically simple cars, so there is a deep supply of good used examples and the parts to keep them going are cheap and available the same day.

That matters more than it sounds. The running cost of a car at this end of the market is dominated by what happens when something needs replacing. A part that costs £40 and turns up in a morning is the difference between an inconvenience and a car sitting on the drive for a fortnight. It is also why we can put every one of them through a full service and 12 months MOT before it is advertised without the price disappearing.

The models we see most

Corsa

The small hatchback that does everything sensibly. Cheap to insure, cheap to tax on the later ones, easy to park on Scarborough's tighter streets, and simple enough that most things that go wrong are quick jobs. The most common first car we sell.

Astra

The step up when a Corsa is not quite enough car. More space for people and luggage without any real penalty in running costs, and generally a more comfortable thing on the A64 or the run over the moors.

Zafira and Zafira Tourer

Seven seats without the size or the thirst of a proper people carrier. The two rearmost seats fold flat into the floor, so most of the time you have a big estate and the other seats are there for the school run or the grandchildren. Popular locally for exactly that reason.

Meriva

A small car with a surprisingly big interior and a high seating position, which is why it is so often the right answer for someone who wants something easy to get in and out of. The rear-hinged back doors on the later shape are genuinely useful with a child seat.

Insignia

A lot of car for the money at this age. Comfortable over distance, well equipped, and cheap to buy because the badge does not hold its value the way a German equivalent does. Worth looking at if you cover real mileage.

What we check before one goes on sale

Every car, Vauxhall or otherwise, gets at least a 50-mile road test and a mechanical health check before it is advertised. Fifty miles is a deliberate number: it is long enough to get everything properly hot, which is when the faults that a five-minute drive round the block will never show up start to appear.

It then leaves us with 12 months MOT, a full service and a 3-month engine and gearbox warranty. That is the same on the cheapest Corsa on the forecourt as it is on anything else.

Buying one from us
