The 107, the C1 and the Aygo are the same car

This is the single most useful thing to know if you are shopping at the cheap end, and it surprises most people. The Peugeot 107, the Citroën C1 and the Toyota Aygo were designed together and built alongside each other in the same factory in the Czech Republic. Mechanically they are the same car with different badges, lights and bumpers.

What that means in practice is that you should shop for all three at once and buy on condition, history and price rather than on the badge. If a 107 is £200 cheaper than an equivalent Aygo, that £200 is real money and you are not giving anything up for it. We tend to have one or another of the three on the forecourt at any given time — have a look at what is in.

The same logic applies a size up: the 108 shares its underpinnings with the current C1 and Aygo in exactly the same way.

Why a small Peugeot makes sense here

The 107 and 108 are about as cheap as running a car legally gets. The one-litre three-cylinder engine is frugal, insurance groups are at the very bottom of the scale, and on the right registration the road tax is either nothing or close to it. For a first car, a second car in the household or short local journeys, very little competes.

They are also genuinely easy to live with in a town like this. Somerset Terrace, the South Bay and most of the older streets round here were not laid out with modern cars in mind, and something you can put into a space without a three-point turn earns its keep every single day.

The trade-off is honest: they are small, they are noisy at speed, and a long run down the A64 in one is not restful. If you regularly do distance, look at something a size up. We would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong car.

Larger Peugeots

The 206, 207, 208 and 307 come through on and off, and at this age they are a lot of car for the money — more space, more comfort and a much easier time on the open road, for not a great deal more than a good 107.

Every one of them is switched on, driven and checked before it is advertised, and if something is not right it either gets fixed or the car does not go on sale.
